Chisels are a tool for creating decorative forms of other blocks, including slabs and stairs. In order to get started, you will need a Chisel and any type of Hammer. Chisels must be cast in molds or forged on an Anvil. In order to start chiseling, hold the chisel in your main hand and a hammer in your off hand, and target a block in the world.
If you can chisel that block, a red outline of the block to be chiseled will be shown based on what Mode you have selected.
The chisel has three modes that can be switched by using M: Slab, Stair, and Smooth. An indicator of your chisel mode should show up next to the hotbar.
Press Right Click to convert the block to the shape that was highlighted in red. If you chiseled a slab, the half of the block you chiseled will pop off and you can grab it. Change the orientation of your player and your mouse to change the orientation of the chiseled block. As a rule of thumb, the orientation of the chiseled block will be the same as if you placed it in that orientation yourself.

The chisel can also be used in some crafting recipes as a shortcut for large quantities.
Be careful! Chiseling in a mineshaft is not safe. Each time you chisel, there is a chance of Collapse.
